LUXEMBOURG, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Luxembourg must help Iceland's biggest bank out of trouble to guarantee the deposits of Belgian savers and preserve trust in its own financial centre, Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker was quoted as saying on Friday.
In an interview with local daily Luxemburger Wort, published shortly before he was to meet Belgium's prime minister to discuss joint rescue efforts, Juncker said: "If people in Belgium got the impression that the Luxembourg government only supports banks that manage the savings of Luxembourgers, that would be a death blow to Luxembourg as a financial centre."
Juncker said the Luxembourg branch of Kaupthing Bank was the parent company of its Belgian subsidiaries, and Luxembourg had a duty to help protect Belgian savers.
Asked whether the worst of the global financial crisis, which has hit Iceland particularly hard, was now over, he said: "I cannot see the end of the tunnel."

13:19 17Oct08 RTRS-LUXEMBOURG'S FRIEDEN SAYS HAS NO INTENTION TO NATIONALISE KAUPTHING BANK LUXEMBOURG
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Luxembourg will increase the level of guaranteed bank deposits to 100,000 euros ($134,700), Budget Minister Luc Frieden said on Friday.
The move followed a recent decision by European Union finance ministers to increase the guarantees from 20,000 euros to ward off the threat of savers withdrawing their money en masse due to the global financial crisis.
"The measures that we have taken in respect of raising the guarantees can obviously not be applied retroactively. A law is always made for the future," Frieden told reporters.
Frieden also said Luxembourg had no plan to nationalise the country's subsidiary of the troubled Icelandic bank Kaupthing.

ça c'est sûr que la non-rétroactivité bloque encore un peu plus le dossier quand même. je ne comprends pas que Juncker n'ait rien dit sur ce point...
